Volumes in external storage systems are referred to as external volumes. Volumes in a local storage
system are referred to as internal volumes.
If External Storage is installed, you can use external and internal volumes as pool-VOLs. However,
if external volumes are used, it increases the likelihood of a failure, and the disaster recovery is
more complex and challenging. If you use external volumes as pool-VOLs, to minimize adverse
effect of failure, use a pool for each external storage system.
You can use multiple external volumes as pool-VOLs in a pool. However, if external volumes are
used, it increases the likelihood of a failure. For example, the pool might be blocked. If the external
pool-VOLs are blocked due to a failure, the pool is also blocked.
For more information about how to restore a blocked pool, see “The workflow for recovering
blocked pools workflow” (page 66).
For more information about external storage systems and disaster recovery methods for external
volumes, see the HP XP P9000 External Storage for Open and Mainframe Systems User Guide.
