6 Disaster recovery operations
This chapter provides information and instructions for recovering from failures in the ESAM system.
Recovery workflow
You detect a failure condition within the ESAM system using the following:
Check for SIMs issued from the primary or secondary system.
Check path failure messages issued by the multipath software on the host.
The following diagram is provided to help you begin the recovery process. The numbers in the
diagram correspond to links in the list below.

When a failure exists, you can check whether failover has occurred using one of the following:
In Remote Web Console, failure is indicated in the Pair Operation window when:
- S-VOL status is SSWS
- The VOL Access column displays Access (Lock) for the S-VOL
Using RAID Manager, execute the pairdisplay command on the secondary system and
check whether S-VOL status is SSWS.
Using multipath software, execute the path status viewing command to check whether the
owner path is offline and the non-owner path is online.
Recovery from blocked P-VOL or S-VOL
When a failure occurs in an ESAM volume, host I/O is automatically switched to the backup
volume and business functions continue uninterrupted. In the meantime, you must recover the pair,
