4.2.1.5 Starting TotalView for the First Time
This sectio n tells you what you must do when running TotalView for the first time before you
begin to use it to debug an application. Th e steps in this section assume that you have already
set up your environment to run TotalView, as described i n Section 4.2.1.2.
The first time you use TotalView, you should set up preferences. For example, you need to
tell TotalView how to launch Total View p ro cesses on all of the processors. After you have
performed the steps in this section once, you do not need to do it again unless you want to
change how processes are launched. The result of these steps is to create a preferences file
the .totalview directory of your hom e directory. As long as this file exists in yo ur home
directory, the preferences you are about to d efine are used whenever you run TotalView.
To create the preferences file, proceed as follows:
1. Start TotalView by entering the following command:
$ totalview
TotalView’s m ain control window (called the TotalView Root Window) appears, as shown
in Figure 4-1:
